Caring for your Spine
Water Therapy and The Spine

What are Some of the Specific Benefits of Water Therapy?

·    Increased range of motion
·    Improved flexibility
·    Increased circulation
·    Improved balance
·    Strength training without hurting joints
·    Soothing form of exercise
·    Burn calories without hurting joints

Who can Benefit the Most from Water Therapy?

·    Individuals with chronic low back pain
·    Individuals who have lower extremity arthritis and joint pain
·    Individuals who are overweight
·    Those recovering from a sports injury, such as an ankle sprain
·    Women who have osteoporosis and are at risk for developing compression fractures
·    Older individuals who are not strong enough for the land workout but could condition with low-impact water therapy
·    Pregnant women with swollen feet and/or back pain
·    People with painful back problems who want to burn calories and not cause further damage to their back.

What are Some Unique Approaches Used to Condition the Spine?

Buoyancy in the water helps reduce excessive curves in the spine.  The buoyancy factor contributes to straightening of the spine in the water.  This may temporarily help some types of scoliosis.  This helps to reduce stress on the facet joints.

Buoyancy in the water reduces loading stress upon spinal joints (facets) and the intervertebral discs by creating a traction affect.  The benefit is greatest in the low back.  There are specialized tools and apparatuses that can be used in the water to add buoyancy, resistance, and stability.  A good example is the aquajogger vest.  This vest provides added buoyancy so the individual wearing the vest in the deep end of a pool can perform a jogging movement in the water.  They can essentially run in place in the water.  The column of water that surrounds them provides resistance against arm and leg movements which helps increase the amount of work that muscles have to perform.  This is an excellent way to promote segmental movement in an environment that does not add stress to the back during the excersies.

Walking or jogging in the shallow end of the pool submerged waist high or slightly higher provides an excellent way to burn calories and strengthen muscles.  It is also an excellent method for improving balance and developing postural stability.
